The Plata River Basin: International Basin Development and Riverine Fisheries
نویسنده
چکیده
Environmental changes in large river basins are subject to forces external to the water and to biological issues. Before 1960, the Plata River Basin was almost undeveloped. The regulation of the Parana for hydroelectricity has been increasing since the early 1970s. Water in reservoirs of the upper Parana Basin currently comprises more than 70 percent of the mean annual discharge at its confluence with the Paraguay River. The expansion of hydroelectric generation in the upper basin brought with it an increase in industry, agriculture, transport and settlements. These in turn have resulted in significant increases in deforestation, soil erosion, changes in water quality and reduced fisheries opportunities in both the upper and lower basins. 253

Local Knowledge in the Study of River Fish Biology: Experiences from the Mekong
The opinions and interpretations expressed within are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Mekong River Commission. 4 FOREWORD The Lower Mekong Basin, covering major areas of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, is a region of dynamic change and growth. Reports in the Mekong Development Series closely examine aspects of change and development in the river basin ...

Bull sharks are a cosmopolitan shark species frequently found in shallow shelf ocean waters and, occasionally, in several tropical river systems around the world. Due to bull shark’s capability to enter riverine systems, the documentation of its occurrence is essential for future fisheries inspections and studies. In this way, this study aims to report the presence of a medium sized specimen of...
متن کاملStatistical modelling of riverine nutrient sources and retention in the Lake Peipsi drainage basin.
Implementation of the Water Framework Directive calls for methodologies and tools to quantify nutrient losses from diffuse sources at a river basin district scale. Here, we examine the possibility of using a statistical model for source apportionment and retention of nutrients in a large transboundary drainage basin (44,000 km2). The model approach uses non-linear regression for simultaneous es...
متن کاملThe influence of a semi-arid sub-catchment on suspended sediments in the Mara River, Kenya
The Mara River Basin in East Africa is a trans-boundary basin of international significance experiencing excessive levels of sediment loads. Sediment levels in this river are extremely high (turbidities as high as 6,000 NTU) and appear to be increasing over time. Large wildlife populations, unregulated livestock grazing, and agricultural land conversion are all potential factors increasing sedi...
متن کاملRelating net nitrogen input in the Mississippi River basin to nitrate flux in the lower Mississippi River: a comparison of approaches.
A quantitative understanding of the relationship between terrestrial N inputs and riverine N flux can help guide conservation, policy, and adaptive management efforts aimed at preserving or restoring water quality. The objective of this study was to compare recently published approaches for relating terrestrial N inputs to the Mississippi River basin (MRB) with measured nitrate flux in the lowe...
